                  1983 – A BEGINNING OF NEW ERA

On this day 25^thJune in 1983,  India won its first ICC cricket  world cup under the captaincy of Kapil dev. Indian team played magnificently  throughout the tournament.

The 1983 world cup was hosted in England and Wales . It was held from 9^th June to 25^th June . Indian team arrived in England without any expectation. In those days there were many strong and powerful  teams like West indies , Australia etc… Totally 8 teams participated in this tournament . The matches consisted  of 60 overs per innings . They played with the red ball.

There were two groups :Group A and Group B . In each group there were 4 teams . India was in  group B

Each team had to play 6 matches within their group .

GROUP MATCHES OF INDIA

First match – India vs West Indies at Manchester on June 9- 10 .  In that match West Indies won the toss and chose to field first . Yashpal Sharma, an Indian batsman scored 89 runs .  India fixed a target of 263 runs . But West Indies lost all wickets for 228 runs. Indian bowlers Roger Binny and Rj Shastri delivered a splendid performance.

                                  

INDIA WON BY 34 RUNS

Second match – India vs Zimbabwe  at Leicester on June 11 . In this match India won the toss and chose to field first . Indian players restricted Zimbabwe for 155 runs . India needed 156 runs to win this match.India chased that target in  37.3 overs .Man of the match was awarded to Madan lal who picked 3 wickets in that match.

                                

India won the match by 5 wickets (with 135 balls remaining)

Third match – India vs Australia at Nottingham on June 13 .  Australia batted first in this  match . Australian batsmen played an incredible innings Tim chappel played an incredible innings by  scoring 110 runs and the total score was 320 runs. India need 321 runs to win the match .It was unfortunate for the Indian team  to get all out for 158 runs. Australian bowlers  did their job very well.

Australia won by 162 runs

     

Fourth match – India vs west indies  at Oval on June 15 . West indies batted first in this match . West indies batsman Sir Viv Richards scored a century in the  match which accounted to a total of 282 runs .India needed 283 runs to win the match, This wasn’t the day for  Indian players. Again the Indian fans and players had a heartbreaking moment when India got all out for 216 runs.

                                  

West indies won by 66 runs.

         

Fifth match – India vs Zimbabwe at Tunbridge wells on june 18 . This was the second time India faced Zimbabwe in the world cup series .India opted to bat first in this match. Back to Back failures made Indian team stronger . Indian Captain Kapil dev played  ardently   and scored 175 runs in just 138 balls. India scored 266 runs . Zimbabwe got all out for 235 runs .

                                              

India won by 31 runs

Sixth  (last group stage match for India) match – India vs Australia at Chelmsford on June 20 .India lost the third match with Australia for 162 runs .This was a rivalry game for India. India chose to bat first and scored 247 runs . Australia needed 248 runs to win the match which seemed to be a lower score compared to the previous match with India.The Indian bowlers delivered an exceptionally promising performance.As a result Australia struggled to reach the target and scored 129 runs only.

                  

India won by 118 runs and Entered the Semi finals

1^st semi final – Eng vs Ind

2^nd semi final – Pak vs WI

1^st semi final:India played the  first semi final against the host team England in their homeland.  The toss was won by England and they choose to bat first. England scored 213 runs for 60 overs . Indian team  captain Kapil dev took 3 wickets . India needed 214 runs to win the match. Indian batsmen like M. Amarnath, Yashpal Sharma, SM Patil played well and India reached the  target in 54.4 overs with loss of 4 wickets.

          

India won the match by 6 wickets(with 32 balls remaining) and Qualified to final

2^nd semi final – Pakistan vs west indies at Oval on june 22

         

West indies won by 8 wickets  and qualified to the finals.

FINALS

INDIA VS WEST INDIES 

India needed to face two time defending champion West Indies  at  Lords  on 25^th June .

It was the most awaited day .The toss was won by West Indies and they chose  to field first . West Indies bowlers gave an eminent performance . Indian team got all out for 183 runs . Indian batsman K. srikanth scored 38 runs. It was a nail biting match for the audience especially the Indian fans . They started to lost hope when all their favorite batsmen got out and the score was just 183. 2^nd innings  started and  our  Indian bowlers gave an brilliant  performance  . Defending champions West Indies  just  scored 140 runs . Indian bowler M. Amarnath bowled 7 overs.  He gave only 12 runs and took 3 wickets. He received the man of the match award. It was a tremendous victory for India. India deserves this victory

India won by 43 runs  and India won its first ICC cricket world cup .

Everyone cherished it as a dream come true moment

Conclusion :

 It was an unexpected and tremendous victory for India .  It was the beginning of  a new era for the Indian team. Kapil dev lead his team with full confidence and compassion  . This tournament was memorable for Indian cricket team and Indian cricket fans.
