REMINISCING IPL

INTRODUCTION

It has been 13 years since the finals of the inaugural season of the IPL has been played where Rajasthan Royals defeated Chennai Super Kings  to win the trophy.  It doesn’t look like 13 years passed by. This is because every season it has been going on entertaining the fans during the hot summer. I’ve some evergreen memories about the inaugural season of the IPL to share with you all on the day when the finals of the inaugural season was held 13 years back.

ORIGIN OF IPL

I think I have been watching cricket since when I was 6. Since then I have been a huge fan of Team India. When India won the inaugural T20 World Cup defeating Pakistan in Johannesburg, I was running out of mind. But then came the IPL – Indian Premier League a franchise based cricket. It was started by Mr. Lalit Modi then the Vice President of BCCI. I still remember reading in the newspaper regarding the 8 Franchises that has been chosen and their icon players in the form of Sachin for Mumbai, Dravid for Bangalore, Ganguly for Kolkata, Sehwag for Delhi and Yuvraj for Mohali. I was very much excited about this new league that has been started by BCCI. The first IPL auction was held on 20th February 2008 with then the captain of Team India MS Dhoni becoming the costliest player in the auction. He was sold to the Chennai franchise for INR 6 crores. I was also wondered with the owners of the franchise because actor Shah Rukh Khan owned the Kolkata franchise, actress Shilpa Shetty owned the Jaipur franchise and actress Preeti Zinta owned the Mohali franchise. Top business people of India like Mukesh Ambani and Vijay Mallaya also owned the Mumbai and Bangalore franchises respectively. Due to this much support from every people, I thought the IPL will reach greater heights then. Now, it has been a grand success. IPL has now become the platform where the youngsters have their chance to express their talents in front of the public.

SOME BEST MOMENTS OF IPL 2008

I still remember watching in TV the way IPL was started in Bangalore. Many actors and actresses performing in the ground, with some of them cheering from the stands, it has been started to celebrate as a festival of cricket in summer by the people of India. The first ever match of IPL is a great example of how the tournament wanted to be. In the very first match of the tournament between the KKR and RCB at the Chinnaswamy stadium, Brendon McCullum was smashing the bowlers of RCB all over the ground. He went on to score 158 runs in just 73 balls. There are many more matches that can be remembered for a long time in that season. The best example for this was the first ever game in the IPL for the Chennai Super Kings. In that match, Michael Hussey scored a century and guided CSK to a victory. Many more performances can be remembered from that season include Adam Gilchrist smashing Mumbai bowlers, Sanath Jayasuriya smashing the Chennai bowlers in Mumbai which later on became the greatest IPL rivalry “CSK VS MI” , Andrew Symonds smashing the Rajasthan bowlers and then Rajasthan fought back to win that game. Some incredible
bowling performances include hat-tricks from L. Balaji, Amit Mishra and Makhaya Ntini. But the best of all bowling performances was that of Sohail Tanvir’s bowling against CSK where he went to take 6 wickets for 12 runs.

It was a heart breaking season for me as my idol Sachin Tendulkar missed the first half of the IPL season due to injury and my favourite team Mumbai Indians failed to qualify for the playoffs. I used to watch every match that Mumbai used to play that time. The season was a mixed season for my team as we finished 5th in the points table and missing the last semi-finals spot by just a point. The most heart-breaking moment for me as a Mumbai fan was that of a game in which Mumbai lost to Punjab by just a run in the last ball of a close encounter.Rajasthan Royals, Kings XI Punjab, Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Daredevils qualified for the semi-finals which ended up with the Royals defeating the Daredevils and the Super Kings defeating the Kings XI to qualify for the finals.

The finals of the inaugural season of IPL was played on 1st of June 2008 at the D.Y.Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai with Rajasthan Royals facing on the Chennai Super Kings. I remember watching that match which was a close encounter which went to the last over which was eventually won by the Royals by 3 wickets. The best performer of that day was Yusuf Pathan, who gave an all-round performance of scoring 56 runs and taking 3 wickets.

CONTROVERSIES THAT RAISED DURING THAT SEASON
A lot of controversies arose during that season. The first one was regarding the cheer leaders who were performing in between the game. It was considered as spoiling the traditional spirit of the game by some people. It reached to its peak when two cheer leaders from London was asked to go back because of their skin. But now, cheer leaders have become more common and the game is enjoyed more because of these type of entertainment.
Another big controversy was that of Harbhajan Singh slapping Sreesanth. This incident happened after the game between Mumbai Indians and Kings XI Punjab on 25th of April 2008 at Mohali. After the match that was won by Kings XI, Harbhajan then the captain of MI slapped Sreesanth of KXIP who came to console him saying hard luck. The official video was not released by the BCCI till now.
But I still remember watching Sreesanth  sobbing inconsolably in before the post match presentation in TV. Harbhajan was banned for the remaining 11 games of the season because of his behaviour.

REVIEW OF IPL 2008

Shaun Marsh of KXIP was the Orange Cap winner. Sohail Tanvir of RR won the Purple Cap. The player of the tournament was Shane Watson. Maximum sixes award was won by Sanath Jayasuriya of MI. Emerging player of the season was Shreevats Goswami of RCB and the fair play award went to the Chennai Super Kings for the spirit of the game.

MY VIEWS ABOUT THE IPL 2008

IPL 2008 was a grand success. It paved way for many youngsters to showcase their talents. Talented players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli came to spotlight and now they are one among the best batsmen in the world. I personally didn’t expect a team like Rajasthan Royals will win this trophy. But with their incredible young talents in the form of Yusuf Pathan and Ravindra Jadeja, guided with experience from foreign players like Shane Warne, Shane Watson, Graeme Smith; they made it possible.

CONCLUSION

IPL is now loved by people all across the world. It has been a boon to all the cricket lovers. But it paved way for the fan following and the fan of one player started trolling the player he hates even though both the players play for the same country because they belong to different franchises. Whatever controversies may come and go, IPL is still the most watched cricket event by the cricket supporters all over the world and it will continue to entertain the people forever.
