NEVER HAVE I EVER’

LET’S BREAK BOREDOM WITH ‘NEVER HAVE I EVER’ : SERIES REVIEW

‘Never have I ever’ is a show whose premiere on Netflix commenced on April 27 and it is still
managing to be on the list of top 10 recommended shows. This show was created by Mindy Kaling.

This show is a comedy teen drama that focuses on the struggles of a first generation American born Indian teenager- Devi ,managing to cope with the culture of both nations! It indeed takes us on a roller-coaster ride of emotions when see a typical South Indian mom Nalini.

Devi, who lost her father Mohan whom she had always seen as an idol and as a friend as a teenager, has a very strained relationship with her mom. After her father’s demise she unfortunately lost the use of her legs in a trauma. So she is practically confined to a wheel chair. It’s just a few minutes of the first episode.

Don’t think it’s a show on a girl bound to a wheel chair!! She overcomes her trauma which has been shown in a few seconds in the episode. So Devi is someone who is very good at her studies and her only adversary at school is Ben . She has two dear friends Fabiola and Eleanor, both struggling in their own terms.

Devi wants to change her social status in her high school, which does not seem so easy for a Indian girl. She has a crush on Paxton. Her beautiful cousin Kamala, a very strange woman, is not very certain of her relationship with Steve. Believe me, the entire story does not revolve around them!!

Since it is Devi Vishwakumar’s story which has been incredibly narrated by the professional tennis player John McEnroe, I really loved that narration. Devi is likely a father’s girl. At one point of time she looks up to a coyote as her dead father and talks to him. She is definitely not her Mom’s favourite since Devi once said it was her mom who should have died instead of her father.

Devi is passionate towards music and is good at playing the harp. She is actually good at it because of her father . Not everyone in this drama is perfect since here every character have their own flaws. Ben, being an ignorant kid, always longs for his parents' love. Paxton has a sister and fears that she might be bullied for her appearance. You will definitely be surprised to see a Ganesh Pooja festival at US which I personally think was an overdo. And an open ending for a show is not good since you need to wait for the second season.

Will get her love Paxton?? Or will her strained relationship with her mom turn into a lovely one? And does Devi make friends with Ben? Do her friends and cousin end their struggling?? The answers to these questions make the crux of the story. ‘Never have I ever’ brings to you a set of emotions towards the end. All character in this drama have a place of self- realization and people start mending their relationships.

This series has a total of 10 episodes with each episode having a run time of half an hour. Bored of this lockdown? To watch something and to feel good, I highly recommend you this show since this show keeps you hooked up until the end.
