FRICTIOUS INDO-CHINESE TIES

Two of the most effervescent nations in the world, India and China managed to become independent from the colonial rule of the British. Since then both the Asian giants have been enormously growing in both economy and population, while both the nations leading the world in the latter.

TRADE IN EARLY CENTURIES:

The Sino-Indo relationship has been active for ages since the year 1950. It was India who recognized People’s Republic of China as a legitimate government. The two countries have also expanded their holistic ties in various aspects of governance. Eventually the relationship was good but something which has always been there between the countries was the border disputes. Amidst the growing border disputes, the Indian government has been constantly humiliated by the media for their poor control over incursion of Chinese troops.

DOKLAM STANDOFF:

This refers to the military border standoff between PRC and the Indian military in the Doklam region, a tri-junction shared by India, China and Bhutan. This dispute arose after China commenced the construction of
a road in the region . Though India had no claim over Doklam, it voiced out its support for Bhutan. During the standoff several soldiers were severely injured. Peace was finally achieved through an ultimatum, thanks to the diplomatic strategy of the Indian bureaucracy.

THE CURRENT DISPUTES:

Just three years after Doklam standoff India is currently facing this border dispute. The standoff initially started on May 5 where both
troops clashed, leaving many injured. Since then both parties have been continuing building troops across the border. PM Narendra Modi on Tuesday discussed the situation with NSA Ajit Doval and the heads of the defence forces The meeting was centered around options available to India, and India determined to follow the principles of diplomacy to resolve the issue.

The current dispute is due to the completion of road and bridge in the Ladakh. India claims the construction is purely on the basis of strengthening the border to develop the remote areas. Both the countries are also in talks in order to end this tension. Even U.S President Donald Trump has expressed his concern to end this raging border dispute.
